An ethical approach to business
UAP are different to many companies. We have a firm belief that we have a duty to our local, national and world communities, and we should give back where possible.
In the last 12 months UAP have embarked on 3 major social projects. The first is the protection against developers of 3 reservoirs in our home town of Bury. The next is a 3 year re-forestation project in Thailand where we are funding the planting of 56,000 trees and the re-introduction of baboons, and other indigenous wildlife back into the forest, which has been devastated by years of tree cutting.
Our third and most emotive project involves the building of 5 community schools in Nepal, one of the poorest countries in the world. Children in the 5 school areas no longer have to leave home at 6.00am in the morning to walk 4 hours to reach school before doing 7 hours work and then walking another 4 hours home. Up to 1,000 children a year will be taught in our UAP Community Schools.
To undertake this task UAP teamed up with local charity DCWC-Nepal who have been building schools in Nepal for several years. The first school was opened in May 2007 and we were proud to have Sean Wilson (best known as Martin Platt from Coronation Street) opening the school on our behalf.
The first school opening was covered by a BBC news story, which can be viewed on-line at www.universal-imports.com
UAP will continue to offer high quality products at sensible prices and we will continue our work of giving back to the community, and to the world at large.
